A Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed Akpi’s lawsuit against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to January 27. In the case, singer Speed Darlington demands N300 million in compensation for his alleged unlawful detention. The IGP’s legal representative, CSP Audu Garba, requested additional time to review a further affidavit presented by Darlington’s attorney, Abubakar Marshal, which caused the delay in the hearing. The legal action argues that Akpi’s arrest and ongoing detention violated his constitutional rights and seeks orders for his immediate release, a court hearing to investigate the circumstances of his detention, and monetary damages. The court registers the case as FHC/ABJ/CS/1832/2024.
The court postponed Akpi, better known as Speed Darlington’s case against the police, until January 27. The police requested additional time to review paperwork recently provided by Darlington’s lawyer, which caused the delay. Consequently, the hearing will take place on the rescheduled date.
Darlington’s lawyer told the court that they were ready to start the case, as the police had already filed their response, and he had given his own reply. However, the police lawyer said he hadn’t received the response yet, so he didn’t want to continue with the hearing until he had seen it.
The police attorney said he needed more time to look through the response to figure out if it raised any new issues that needed attention. Because of this, the judge agreed to delay the case until January 27, giving the police time to review everything before moving forward.
In the lawsuit, Speed asks the court to rule that his arrest was wrong and violated his rights. He also wants the court to either release him immediately or investigate the reason behind his detention. On top of that, he asks for N300 million in compensation for the police unlawfully holding him since 2024.
